Dance & Hollywood

It’s a great time to be in hip hop and in Hollywood – the creativity, skill and attention to the dance is like never before.  New people are seeing breaking for the first time on TV and in the movies and it is gaining respect as the legitimate art form that it is.  It’s also a time of unparalleled creativity – cutting-edge choreographers are pushing the limits of the mainstream definition of ‘hip hop’ – being emotional, telling a story – but also being rooted to the history and the cypher.

But with great power comes great responsibility…
We’ve got to make sure representations are accurate and artists are united.  Hear thoughts on this Lady Jules and the Beat Freaks; Legacy, Kathryn and Ellenore from So You Think You Can Dance; Jon Chu, Director of Step Up 2 and 3D; the stars of B-GIRL and more, all from the B-GIRL Red Carpet!

Speaking of Hollywood… BIG NEWS!! Our amazing choreographer Flipz (Ivan “Flipz” Velez) will be performing at the OSCARS on Sunday, March 7th. Tune in, TiVo, turn off the phone because Oscars ain’t never seen nothin’ like Flipz.  (Scorsese, from the front row: “that guy! I’m gonna make that guy a star!”)

Lady Jules on the Red Carpet!

The first OFFICIAL video from the B-GIRL Red Carpet in LA!

“B-girl TV” with our host, the fabulous b-girl Peppa (of Breakgirl, Syrenz and more!) Peppa is Joan & Melissa Rivers  with hard-hitting questions for everyone on the Red Carpet, like…. “What do you do to work out?” — we know Jules loves to dance but a serious b-girl has to train more, for strength, endurance and agility.  Jules talks about her process, about making the movie and her love for one Mr. Marty Scorsese! (short, but cute).

Thank you Keila!

I was just sent a photo that made me smile all the way down to my toes, melted my innards into gooey-gooshy-squishiness… Man that sounds so gross.  But for real, this kind of made my month:

It’s not just the INSANE HONOR of being alongside MJ (the reason half my friends & BGIRL cast became dancers) but it’s also just…. she looks so happy!!  My movie made this adorable little girl happy.
Okay, maybe I can only take credit for 50% of the happiness because rightfully MJ gets the other 50 (maybe 65) but I’m cool with that.  That is totally fair to me.  I will gladly accept 50% of happy-credit.  Heck I’ll take 32%.  14%.  0.00039%.  If I have contributed to the global total of happy in even the most tiniest amount…. well, that’s the ballgame folks.  It’s the show, the sum-total, it’s what we came here for.
Thanks Keila, you gave me the best gift.
